CLEAR vs. TSA PreCheck vs. Global Entry: How to Choose

People who travel regularly can save a great deal of time with expedited security.

Solutions like Clear, TSA PreCheck, and Global Entry will make your airport experience easier than ever.

But which option should you choose?

CLEAR

CLEAR offers a quicker airport security experience through the use of biometrics. Fingerprint and iris scans help to verify your identity, allowing you cut to the front of the airport security line as a result.

Run by a private company, CLEAR costs just $15 per month (billed annually). You can enroll online or in person for instant access to the dedicated airport CLEAR line.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck is available through the U.S. government and costs $85 for five years. The program—administered by the Transportation Security Administration—gives travelers a “Known Traveler Number” (KTN) that allows them to access a special security line when traveling domestically.

After completing the application process and passing a background check, PreCheck members can complete airport security without removing their shoes, belt, or electronic devices. The time savings are very real.

Global Entry

Global Entry offers all the benefits of PreCheck in addition to quicker U.S. customs screening. Run by the U.S. Customs and Border protection, the program features more stringent requirements—including a current passport and a comprehensive interview.

A five-year Global Entry membership costs $100. If you travel abroad often, this may well be the solution for you.

Key Differences

While PreCheck and Global Entry offer a quicker physical experience, CLEAR provides a faster document and identity verification experience. All three solutions will get you through the airport faster, but bundling either PreCheck or Global Entry with CLEAR will give you the most bang for your buck.
