The research is in, and American smartphone users spend an average of 3 hours and 30 minutes glued to their devices each day.
Yikes, right?
That’s no small amount of time. Some would say it’s too much time.
I, personally, will waste the occasional day with relentless scrolling. And then I’ll remind myself that there are plenty of other things I’d rather be doing.
You know the drill. And chances are you’ve been in my position—because, as the research shows, millions of us have a hard time putting our phones down.
So, the next time you reach for your cell?
The next time you have the urge to while your afternoon away double-tapping photos on Instagram?
Here are a few things you can do instead:
1. Recreate a Favorite Recipe.
What’s your go-to dish? Whether you feel like cooking or baking or just winging it, experiment with an old favorite recipe. Engage your hands and mind, and you’ll forget about your phone.
2. Pick Up that Novel You’ve Been Meaning to Read.
When I spend hours without purpose on my cell, there’s one thing and one thing alone that snaps me out of my stupor: thinking about all the pleasure reading I could have been doing instead.
3. Start that Novel You’ve Been Meaning to Write.
This one’s a little tongue in cheek, but it’s true. Even a short digital detox can help amp up your creativity—allowing you to improve your focus and tackle personal projects.
4. Take a Walk in Nature.
Bring your phone in case of emergencies, but don’t take it out unless you need to. Instead, add an outdoor excursion to your calendar, embrace the scenery, and recharge.
With these strategies in your arsenal, you’ll lower your screen time in no time. I, for one, believe in you.
