How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

January 17 has a bit of a reputation.

Some know it as “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day.” Others simply consider it the day people start to abandon their New Year’s resolutions.

This doesn’t have to be you. If you pledged to hit the gym more in 2023, or to spend a half-hour reading each day, don’t give up.

Instead, aim to follow a series of proven tips that will keep you on track. This post will outline key strategies for upholding your 2023 New Year’s resolutions:

1. Start small.

It may sound cliché, but don’t sprint. Instead, view your resolutions as a marathon. Rather than pledging to lose 50 pounds in 90 days, try to lose a little bit of weight each month. This is much more realistic and can be achieved by making small dietary shifts. Focus on what’s feasible.

2. Track your progress.

How can you achieve your goals if you don’t know whether you’re making progress? Taking stock of those small wins will help you keep your eye on the prize. Journal your successes, jot down any milestones you reach, and remember that you are right where you should be.

3. Practice forgiveness.

So you missed a week’s worth of workouts. You haven’t meditated in days. Forgive yourself, and accept that we all hit the occasional roadblock. Rather than giving up, plan to move forward. Commit to making progress throughout the year—even if you face challenges along the way.

4. Use the buddy system.

The best way to hold yourself accountable is to share your goals with another person. By embracing the buddy system, you and your loved ones can share your resolutions and keep each other on track. Aim to find a reliable person who you trust and work toward your goals together.

5. Reward yourself.

Resolutions shouldn’t be all work and no play. While you don’t need to go overboard, plan to reward yourself from time to time. For example, if you sock away $500 in savings this month, you might treat yourself to a nice dinner out. The occasional reward will keep you motivated.

We welcome any thoughts on the above strategies. Please share your feedback with us in the comments below.
